From Chicago to DC: FACT’s Next Chapter
We are pleased to share that after 43 wonderful years in Chicago, FACT has relocated to Washington, DC.
FACT was founded in Chicago in 1982 by Robert Brown, a leading animal welfare advocate at that time. FACT was the first U.S. organization devoted to fighting for the humane treatment of farm animals and addressing the public health problems that result from raising farm animals in confined, inhumane conditions.
During our time in Chicago, FACT has made lasting change for farm animals and public health—from launching the successful Nest Eggs® brand in the 1980s that freed over 1 million hens from cages, to awarding grants that help farmers adopt more humane practices, to driving national reforms that reduced the overuse of antibiotics in livestock.
Clearing out the office was no small task. As FACT’s last staff member in Chicago, Charlotte sorted through decades of history—files dating back to our founding, posters from the Nest Eggs® brand, old newspaper articles, early issues of our FACT Sheets newsletter, and countless photos of happy farm animals. We’re in the process of digitizing these pieces of our history and look forward to creating a FACT archive in the near future.
From now on, FACT will operate virtually, our 8 staff members live across the country from North Carolina to California. The new office is in a co-working space alongside other farming-related organizations, including our partners at the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC). Our Executive Director, Harry Rhodes, will be based there along with our new administrative assistant Chika Eke.
While it is bittersweet to leave Chicago, we are excited about this next chapter. Being in the nation’s capital will provide FACT with greater visibility and strengthen our ability to advocate on behalf of farmers, animals, and consumers.
