Dear Commissioner Califf,

It is the responsibility of the United States Food and Drug Administration to “protect the public health,” and take swift action to ban the cancer-causing pig drug carbadox. The drug is poisonous to consumers and food workers, it is an environmental pollutant, and is completely unnecessary in swine production. Farmers in the EU, Canada, Australia, Brazil, China, Japan, Uruguay and the UK raise pigs without the use of this drug, as do many farmers in the U.S. At its worst, the cancer causing drug is given to pigs solely to improve the rate of growth and at its best, it is used to control disease caused by unhealthy conditions on farms. Pigs that are properly weaned from their mothers, raised in more spacious environments and fed sound diets never need carbadox. These pigs provide healthier meat for consumers that is both more nutritious and free from carcinogenic residues.

The FDA has long recognized that approved usage of carbadox may result in unsafe levels of carcinogenic residues. The international standard setting body Codex Alimentarius found that there is no safe level of residues of carbadox or its metabolites in food that represents an acceptable risk to consumers. Currently there is no approved and adequate method for even detecting these carcinogenic residues in food products. This is absolutely unacceptable. Not only has the FDA determined carbadox is unsafe and continues to allow its use, but there is no longer an approved method to evaluate the level of risk to consumers.

It’s high time the FDA banned carbadox and put the public's health and safety before the interests of the drug industry.

Sincerely,

Please personalize your message to the Commissioner and state why carbadox is a concern to you and your family.
