This World Farm Animals Day, Give Farm Animals Their Freedom

This World Farm Animal Day (October 2), you can help animals move from confinement on factory farms to being raised humanely on pasture. No animal deserves to spend their life in a cage—but for millions of mother pigs, this is their reality.

In industrial farming, sows are often confined in crates so small they can’t even turn around. These cages, used for both pregnancy and giving birth, force pigs to spend nearly every day of their lives on hard concrete floors. They are unable to move freely, build nests, or properly care for their young. The result? Years of pain, stress, and suffering.

While some producers claim these crates are necessary to protect piglets, there are kinder, proven alternatives. Humane farmers demonstrate every day that sows can live safely with their young using methods like pasture farrowing, deep-bedded housing, or farrowing huts that allow pigs to move freely. These approaches protect piglets while giving mother pigs the freedom to nest, socialize, and thrive.
